Also this year, during the celebration of the Midsummer’s Eve and Midsummer’s Day, the traffic police promises to carry out very extensive roadside checks within the framework of the campaign „Sleep yourself sober!”. Also a part of the MTPL funds is invested in this campaign. Statistics show that over the last decade these specific and ambitious actions have led to a significant reduction of the number of accidents on Latvian roads.
Expressing their support for this action, AAS Seesam
In recent years the number of road accidents occurred just during the holidays when the roadside checks were announced, has shown a significant decline. In the „Bloody Midsummer”, ten years ago, 26 persons were killed in the result of accidents on the Latvian roads just during the Midsummer holidays. On
Summarizing the statistics on traffic accidents in June available to the Latvian Transport Insurers Association for the last two years, we can see that just around the Midsummer’s Eve and Midsummer’s Day, from the 22nd to 25th June, the number of traffic accidents has been approximately by 40% less than in other days – if in average 92 traffic accidents have been registered in other days of June, then these four days account for an average of 55 accidents a day. This can be explained firstly by the fact that people in these holidays is travelling less than on weekdays, and secondly, knowing about the roadside checks, the drivers more carefully consider whether or not they are able to drive .
Assessing the number of accidents occurred on different days of the week, we see that in average approximately the same number of accidents occurs on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays. On Thursdays this number grows by 10%, but on Fridays - as much as by 24%. The reason of such a significant increase in the number of accidents before the weekend is that more people are driving home, leaving the city and causing traffic jam, which creates additional stress. On Saturdays the accident risk is reduced by about 30%, but on Sundays - even by half.
