During the period from July 27 till August 31 JSIC Seesam
The State Police data show that during the summer from 150 to 200 bikes in average are stolen in
Despite the fact that police officers currently pay bigger attention to the bike safety at parking lots of shopping centres, the number of thefts from the specialized bicycle sheds located there is still very high. Now, thieves steal bikes from sheds, garages, basements, stairwells and balconies of residential houses.
To prevent bicycle thefts or robberies, Seesam recommends to bicycle owners to take more care of safety of their bikes:
-
It takes only a couple of minutes to steal a bike. Therefore, an unlocked bicycle shall not be left unattended even for a while in a parking lot of a shopping centre, in a staircase and even in the yard of a private house.
-
Bicycle should always be locked to a permanently fixed object, such as bicycle stand, with the locking device embracing the bicycle frame and the permanently fixed object. In addition, it is recommended to connect the two bicycle wheels with a U-shaped or similar locking device - compared with the cable or chain locks, U-shaped locking devices are more difficult for thieves to break. Connecting and locking bicycle wheels or handlebar to the frame, leaving the bike unlocked to an object, is an insufficient safety measure - a thief can easily remove the bike or carry it away.
-
It is recommended to use high-quality bicycle locking devices. The newer and more valuable bicycle, the more interesting it may be to thieves. When buying a bike, please assign an amount which is at least 10% of the bike’s price for purchase of a safe locking device.
-
Do not lock the bike to small trees or small bars, or to wire or wooden fences because those objects may be easily broken or pulled out.
-
Do not leave the bike at night on a balcony or an open loggia, especially in the first or second floor. Police has reported on a bicycle stolen from a third floor balcony.
-
Whenever possible, the bike should be placed in a room of the apartment or the house. Do not leave an unlocked bike in the staircase even if it is locked.
-
When transporting the bike on the car roof rack, it is recommended to place the bike indoors at night. During the night time, do not leave your bike inside the car or in any other place where it is easily visible. It is advisable to lock also the bike which is placed on the roof rack.
-
When the bike is locked to an object and left unattended, please take with you all easily removable valuable accessories, such as bicycle computer, lights, and even the seat. If the front wheel is easily removable, it is advisable to remove also the wheel and connect it with the help of the locking device to the back wheel, frame and the immovable object.
