„Seesam Latvia” has become a leading motorcycle insurer in Latvia

A A A
30.06.2010

Comparing statistics of the two previous years, the number of road accidents caused by motorcyclists decreased by half in 2009. In 2008 there were registered 158 traffic accidents caused by motorcyclists, but in 2009 - 82 such accidents. In the past year, most accidents were caused by motorcyclists in April, at the beginning of motorcycle season, and in July, when there was especially warm weather.

Despite the fact that recently the number of accidents caused by motorcyclists has fallen, about 5% of all motorcycle riders are involved in road traffic accidents every year. According to statistics, motorcyclists aged 18 to 22 years have a greater risk to get into an accident – persons of this age group cause an accident or get into accidents almost three times more often than 31 to 35 years old riders, and approximately five times more often than 36 to 45 years old riders. This statistic is associated with the small driving experience of young road users, recklessness, and inappropriate choice of speed. Characteristically, the vast majority of traffic accidents have been caused by motorcyclists under 30 years.

An average motorcycle owner is 31 years old.

80% of all road traffic accidents caused by motorcyclists have taken place in Riga and Riga region.

In April, at the beginning of the motorcycle season, AAS „Seesam Latvia” started a campaign of sale of MTPL policies to motorcycle riders. Now the results of this campaign for the first two months are summarized.

This year, approximately 3000 owners of motorcycles, or about 28% of motorcyclists in Latvia, purchased MTPL policies for their vehicles from the AAS "Seesam Latvia". Thus, the company "Seesam Latvia" has become a leading insurer of motorcycles in the country. Mr. Pēteris Lečmanis, a motor transport insurance risk underwriter of "Seesam Latvia", explains this choice of customers by the fact that the insurance company had very carefully selected the scope of risks insured and the amount of premiums, thus making this type of insurance attractive to customers. This year, approximately 30% of customers purchased a MTPL policy for a motorcycle through the Internet, because in this case a 10% discount was applied to each purchase.

About half-part of motorcycle owners usually get a MTPL policy for three months, which is the minimum period for which one can conclude a motor transport third-part liability insurance contract. It happens that the owners of motorcycles automatically choose this shortest period of insurance, but the experience of insurers shows that these drivers often have to buy another insurance policy for three months at the end of the summer. It is the reason why "Seesam Latvia" invites motorcyclists to enter into a MTPL contract for six or nine months at the beginning of the season at a better price.

44 % of all the motorcycle MTPL policies are purchased in April, at the beginning of the motorcycle season.

More than half of all motorcycle MTPL policies sold are contracts for three months. 37% of motorcycle owners buy a policy for six months and only 7% - for 12 months.

Average amount of indemnity paid out to a person who has suffered damage in the result of an accident caused by a motorcycle rider is 472 LVL. If a motorcycle has been damaged in the result of an accident, the average indemnity amount is 1300 LVL.
